MY PLACE

I had a nice place once
Some time ago
It’ s still there, you know
I passed by the other day
It’s painted grey
We did that together
In good weather
We painted the front of our house
Until things changed
Emotions rearranged
I found bottles a lot
Some empty, some not
Denials, excuses, heard it all before
I walked out the door
Of my place
Kids were grown up, had their own lives
Married lovely husbands and wives
I was sad to see them leave
But knowing they will achieve
The happiness they deserve
I have a new place
Quiet, small, neat
No one falling at my feet
I live alone, but not alone
My family often call
I don’t see him at all
It’s sad as I recall
The day we spoke our vows
We meant it all
“White lace and promises”
Broken dreams, wasted years
Disbelief, denial, silent tears
My grandchildren soothe my soul
I love to hear their sounds
See their bright, young faces
In my new place.
